The nüvi 755T comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Garmin's patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location. Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.
With Lane Guidance, the nüvi alerts you to which lane you need to be in for upcoming turns. In the image above, the three middle lanes of this seven-lane highway are highlighted. | With Junction View, you'll get photo-realistic 3D views upcoming turns with signage--signs not needed for navigation are faded. | Lane Guidance With the new Lane Guidance feature built into the nüvi 7x5 series, you'll never question which lane you should be driving in again. It provides you with a view of what lane you should be in for upcoming turns. And with the 3D Lane Assist Junction View, you'll be able to see a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. The signs that aren't needed for navigation are faded compared to the appropriate lane signage. Integrated Traffic Receiver Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information--the traffic updates are free for the life of the device. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time. Watch informational video In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous--there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions. HotFix Satellite Prediciton Garmin's HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nüvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off. Multi-Destination Routing This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about). A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map. Where Am I? Where's My Car? The nüvi 7x5 series is the first to answer two common questions: "Where am I?" and "Where’s my car?" At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nüvi 7x5s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount. Great value for GPS July 28, 2010 JD As a first time GPS user, I was looking for a GPS that would give me the basics but also have some amenities to it as well and this GPS has done just that. I was intrigued by the traffic and the multi-point destinations specifically as it set itself apart from other similarly priced units that had what I wanted.
The traffic feature, when available, is nice and has helped navigate to destinations. It has been reliable as far as how long and where a backup will be. However, I wish that the traffic feature was available in a broader area. Advertisements on GPS are very small and a non-issue.
The multi-point destination, which I was looking foward to, is great to have. Having the speed limit available while driving has also been very useful.
When forced to take an alternate route because of a downed tree, the GPS recalculated very quickly and put me on a differrent route.
The volume and voice is loud and clear from the unit.
In my opinion, this GPS is well worth the price listed on Amazon.
Gamin nuvi 755T July 26, 2010 Robert C Labit (DESTREHAN, LA, US) Upgraded from older Garmin GPS.
The 755T works great, love the traffic information and ease of use.
Lane assist is the bomb July 26, 2010 Timothy C. Mak (Bay Area, CA) I love the lane assist feature on this unit when I'm in unfamiliar areas.
I have two main complaints of this unit. I wish the spoken voices were more clear. I find myself still having to look at the unit because I didn't understand what was said. This can be dangerous in high traffic conditions where you need to make split-second decisions.
My second issue is that the keyboard is too small when typing addresses. I'm sure this is just a matter of time before I adjust but it's definitely been a source of frustration for my wife who has much smaller hands and shouldn't have the same problems I have!
99.9% there July 22, 2010 J. Barenys (Webster, NY USA) This is a great unit for the money. A happy upgrade over a magellan unit that was now dated and for about the price of new maps for that one I get a ton more features. The traffic reciever is great add-on!
About the only thing that drives me nuts is that it does not power off after a while of the vehicle not moving. My GMC does not turn of the power source so the unit just stays on until you manually shut it off. Annoying to say the least. A simple software update would solve that.
Considering A Garmin Auto GPS - BEWARE! July 22, 2010 Joshua Heydemann (Oceanside, NY, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING A GARMIN GPS - READ THIS 1ST. I wish I had read all the reviews before I may a purchase!
I purchased the 775T 3 months ago for a new job - driving a route in an area unfamiliar to me and have been TRYING to use it since.
The main issue for me is that the unit does not accurately plot my position. To me, is the fundamental capability of a GPS. Realizing that I may have a bad unit or have incorrect settings I consulted the documentation that came with the unit. The only document in the box is a very small folding pamphlet, with the skimpiest of information. I latter found the help section built into the unit helpful. But, it did not solve my problem so I contacted Tech Support. Rather I tried to contact Tech support.
Needing help ASAP, I tried to phone customer support. The 1st time the recording reported hold time in excess of 30 minutes, so I tried latter in the day. The 2nd call reported the same hold times, but this time I waited. I waited over 45 minutes and had to hang up without speaking to anyone. I tried phoning 2 more times, on different days and waiting over 30 minutes each time, with no luck getting a support person on the phone. Email does work, and eventually I had an on going email chat with the support team about the problem of not have accurate plotting capabilities.
Resolving the problem with the email interchange - which took weeks, and has not solved this problem. I tried the following:
1. Doing a "master reset" which can erase your favorites
2. up dating the units software, which once you learn the process is very simple. but not straight forward
3. allowing the unit to acquire satellites, by sitting in my car while its standing still for 10 minutes with the unit on and monitoring the satellites acquisition progress.
4. Replacing my original unit. Garmin to their credit did send me another unit, however the new one is the SAME as the original one. It still does not know where I am.
In fairness to Garmin, let me point out that they seem to want to help me. However, they claim that my unit is functioning within accepted parameters. When I say the unit is not plotting my position accurately, here is an explanation of what I mean. After the unit has sat motionless, with a clear view of the sky for 10+ minutes, and acquired satellites, the unit reports that it is accurate with in 10'. However it plots my position at least 60' away from my actual position. I have measured this by acquiring satellites in front of my house, which has a clear view of the sky. When I check the "Where Am I" function, it places me 2 address down the block. With the average lot size in my neighborhood being 60' wide (very urban) 2 doors down is over 60' away.
Now a -/+60' error in itself is not terrible, but it becomes unusable with driving because the error becomes greater. When on an Express Way at 55mph, the error becomes 150' to 300'. When looking for an exit or a merge I am usually past it by 300' when the unit tells me to turn. When I'm traveling on a route I know, its funny to watch the unit plot me on the highway, even though I've exited & have traveled halfway up the off ramp. Eventually, the map scrambles to catch up with my actual position! not good.
Aside from the basic function of plotting my position, I have other interface issues that I am not happy with & are Garmin design limitations, and are not changeable.
I realize that other consumers of Garmin Auto GPS products may not have my experience, perhaps this particular line the 755 series is flawed. However with this companies reputation, and for the money, I expected much more, at least basic functionality.
I will replace this unit - but not with a Garmin.
